Warramunda estate

The Estate & Our History

Warramunda Vineyard was acquired in 2007 with a vision to embrace the region’s unique geology and terroir. We began planting new vines and nurturing those already established. Over time, we cultivated an extensive range of varieties including Chardonnay, Viognier, Marsanne, Pinot Noir, Syrah, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Malbec, Merlot and Petit Verdot. In 2013, we proudly released our first Warramunda Estate vintage. The wines exceeded our expectations and set us firmly on a path of producing signature, handcrafted wines that reflect our site, our skill, and the quality of our fruit. In 2014, our Cellar Door opened, welcoming guests into what became an extension of our family home. Visitors were invited to relax, enjoy a glass of wine, share food, and take in the sunshine and sweeping valley views. In 2024, we made the strategic decision to close our Cellar Door and transition Warramunda Estate fully into the Upper Yarra Valley. This move reflects our long-term commitment to cool-climate viticulture and allows us to focus on varieties that thrive at higher altitudes, particularly Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. It also provides the ideal environment for expanding our sparkling wine program, taking advantage of the region’s cooler temperatures and slower ripening to craft wines of greater precision and finesse. The future, just like the passion we hold for Warramunda Estate, remains bright. We thank you for your support and look forward to continuing this journey with you as we evolve our focus and pursue excellence in cool-climate winemaking.

The Vineyard

We make Warramunda Estate wines to reflect their terroir – the distinctive place in which they are grown in the Upper Yarra Valley. Covering approximately fifty-five acres, the vineyard is planted to Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Syrah, Pinot Gris and Sauvignon Blanc. Each variety is carefully matched to site, aspect and soil to express the unique character of the Upper Yarra Valley. Warramunda Estate practises sustainable viticulture, combining organic and biodynamic philosophies. Our focus begins with the earth up, with particular attention to the microflora within the soil. Across the property, there are three distinct soil types, beginning with prized red basalt soils, transitioning through lighter clay and sedimentary rock such as sandstone, siltstone, and shale, and finishing with areas shaped by ancient ocean beds. These varied soil profiles contribute depth, complexity and individuality to our wines. We actively encourage healthy soil biology by planting organic cover crops such as rye and clover, which are worked back into the soil as compost. This promotes strong worm activity and a balanced, thriving microflora, creating an ideal environment for vine health and longevity. The vineyard relies solely on natural rainfall, providing balance and consistency throughout the growing season. All vineyard management practices are guided by the lunar cycle, which follows four three-day periods known as flower day, fruit day, root day and leaf day. Throughout each lunation, the moon passes through the New Moon, First Quarter, Full Moon and Last Quarter, with each phase lasting between 6.75 and 8 days. Key activities such as pruning are timed in harmony with these cycles. Canopy management is a central focus, ensuring a balanced ratio of fruit to foliage. This allows the vine’s energy to be directed toward optimal fruit development and ripening, achieving a precise balance between natural sugars and acidity at harvest. Our vineyard team spends significant time tending to each vine across every block, allowing vines to grow according to their natural patterns while maintaining health and vitality. These careful, considered steps culminate in wines that are both expressive of individual varietal character and true to the distinctive terroir of Warramunda Estate in the Upper Yarra Valley. The resulting wines display strong varietal aromas, depth of flavour and soft, balanced tannins. Throughout the growing season, vineyard canopies are protected using natural sprays such as Bordeaux blend (copper sulphur). No insecticides are used, encouraging a diverse population of beneficial insects that naturally control pests. Each element of our approach works in harmony to produce super-premium fruit of exceptional quality.

Our focus on canopy ensures that we have a balanced ratio of grapes to foliage, creating the right amount of energies driven into the development and ripening of fruit. This process confirms that we have the exact balance between sugars and acids at harvest.

Our vineyard team spends a significant amount of time tending to each vine in each block to ensure the vines are healthy and reflecting their natural growth patterns to produce fruit of optimum quality. The culmination of each of these small and melodic steps is to produce an output that is both unique to the individual style of the wine that we are creating while reflecting the distinctive terroir of Warramunda Estate. The Terroir

he Yarra Valley is one of Australia’s most celebrated cool-climate wine regions, renowned for producing wines of elegance, purity and regional expression. Characterised by mild summers, crisp winters and generous rainfall in winter and spring, the climate provides ideal conditions for slow, even ripening and the development of complex flavour profiles in premium wine grapes. Warramunda Estate is ideally positioned within this landscape, with a predominantly northerly aspect that ensures maximum sunshine exposure throughout the growing season. This orientation is essential for balanced vine growth and optimal fruit development. The vineyard’s gentle downward slopes also provide natural drainage toward the Lone Star Creek, contributing to vine health and consistency from season to season. Across the estate, the soils are diverse and expressive, beginning with fertile red volcanic soils, transitioning into lighter clay and sedimentary rock, and extending into areas formed from ancient ocean beds. The underlying geology comprises turbiditic sandstone, siltstone and shale, creating soils that are naturally acidic, well-drained and highly suited to viticulture. This variation in soil type plays a significant role in shaping the structure, texture and complexity of the wines, particularly Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. The vineyard sits within the Woori Yallock area of the Upper Yarra Valley, a sub-region that is rapidly becoming the benchmark for cool-climate, site-driven wines. With sweeping views of the Yarra Ranges, Warramunda Estate is surrounded by some of Australia’s most respected vineyards and wineries, including nearby neighbours such as Henk, Lusatia Park, Bastard Hill, Hazeldene and Willow Lake. The nearby Warramate Hills provide a natural shelter from extreme weather, further enhancing the site’s suitability for premium grape growing. All of these elements, climate, aspect, elevation, soil diversity and location, combine to create a truly distinctive terroir. Warramunda Estate is perfectly placed to produce wines of finesse and depth that express both varietal purity and the unmistakable character of the Upper Yarra Valley.

History

The Ryrie Brothers first settled the area in 1837, after driving their cattle herd south from NSW and establishing a 17,000-hectare farm on the site of Yering Station. James, Donald and William planted two varieties of grapes in 1838, although cattle were still their main enterprise. Paul de Castella purchased the property from the Ryrie Brothers in 1850 and wine-grape production in Victoria became a growing industry. Many hectares started to be planted of wine grape varieties, under familiar labels such as Yeringberg, and St Hubert’s. Unfortunately, by 1921, the Yarra Valley wine industry was in serious decline and most of the region was converted to cattle grazing pastures. In 1968, Wantirna Estate and soon after, in 1969 Yarra Yering were established. This signalled a rebirth of the Yarra Valley industry and vineyards began to emerge across the region. In 2015, the area processed 1.67 million tons of wine grapes and had approximately 3,000 hectares under vine.

Today, the region is recognised as home to some of the best wines Australia produces. It is also one of Victoria’s most important food bowls with quick and direct access to the markets and ports of Melbourne. Stone fruit, apple, pear, cherry, strawberry as well as olive, milk, cheese, beef, lamb, pork and vegetable farms are just a few of the agribusiness activities that thrive in the region.

ROBERT & IRENE MAGDZIARZ

Robert and Irene purchased Warramunda Estate, formerly Warramunda Station, in 2007, after long careers in the local hospitality industry as well as handplanting their first vineyard in the Macedon Ranges. As previous owners of pubs, bars and restaurants, Robert and Irene have a deep understanding and appreciation for quality produce and wanted the wines they produced to reflect this commitment to premium products, made with sustainable practice in mind.

OLIVIA ZAK-MAGDZIARZ

After a childhood spent on her parent’s vineyard in the Macedon Ranges and the Yarra Valley, it only made sense that Liv would take on the family business of winemaking and at the age of 16 she undertook her first vintage at Yering Station. Alongside her budding career as a winemaker, Liv branched out into the Film & Television industry, specializing in special effects make up and worked extensively in Vancouver and Los Angeles. During this time Liv returned frequently to her home at the vineyard and has remained an integral member of our winemaking team.

Liv now manages alongside her parents and is involved in all aspects of the business.
